Our Technology

Advanced Therapeutic Technology for Spine Recovery

At Diamond Bar Spine Center, we use a variety of therapeutic technologies to complement our non-surgical spinal decompression and functional rehabilitation programs.

No single treatment is appropriate for every patient. Following an evaluation, Dr. George W. Than may incorporate selected therapeutic modalities based on the patient’s condition, symptoms, examination findings and response to care.

Therapeutic Modalities

Targeted Technology for Personalized Recovery

Class IV Therapeutic Laser

Class IV laser therapy, sometimes referred to as high-power therapeutic laser or photobiomodulation, delivers specific wavelengths of light energy into targeted tissues.

Laser therapy may be incorporated into a treatment program to help reduce pain and inflammation and support the body’s natural tissue-recovery processes. The higher power of a Class IV therapeutic laser allows treatment of larger and deeper anatomical regions than many lower-powered laser devices.

It may be considered as an adjunctive therapy for selected musculoskeletal conditions involving the back, neck, joints, muscles, tendons and other soft tissues.

Therapeutic Ultrasound

Therapeutic ultrasound uses high-frequency sound waves delivered through a handheld applicator and coupling gel.

Unlike diagnostic ultrasound, which is used to create images, therapeutic ultrasound is used as a treatment modality. The sound waves produce mechanical energy within the tissues and, depending upon the treatment settings, may also create a gentle heating effect.

Ultrasound may be used to help increase local circulation, decrease muscle and soft-tissue stiffness, and improve tissue extensibility as part of a broader rehabilitation program.

Iontophoresis

Iontophoresis uses a mild electrical current to assist in delivering an ionized medication through the skin to a localized treatment area.

Rather than an injection, the medication is placed on the skin using a specially designed electrode or treatment system. The electrical current helps facilitate movement of the medication across the skin.

Iontophoresis may be considered when a clinician wishes to provide localized medication delivery to a painful or inflamed musculoskeletal area without using a needle.

Medication use requires appropriate clinical evaluation and authorization.

Hako-Med® Therapy with VasoPulse®

The Hako-Med system is an advanced electrotherapy platform that allows different forms and frequencies of electrical stimulation to be selected according to the therapeutic objective.

Electrical currents may be used as an adjunct to help manage pain, reduce muscle spasm and stimulate muscles depending upon the particular treatment parameters selected.

The VasoPulse component provides rhythmic pneumatic compression. Inflatable chambers gently compress and release around an extremity, creating a pumping action designed to support circulation and assist movement of fluid through the treated area.

When clinically appropriate, these therapies can complement spinal and musculoskeletal rehabilitation.

Shortwave Diathermy

Diathermy uses electromagnetic energy to produce therapeutic effects within deeper tissues.

Unlike a conventional heating pad that primarily warms tissues from the surface, shortwave diathermy can deliver energy to tissues beneath the skin. Depending upon the equipment and treatment parameters, it may be used to provide thermal or non-thermal therapeutic effects.

Diathermy may be incorporated into treatment to help reduce pain and muscle spasm, improve tissue flexibility and prepare an area for mobilization, stretching or therapeutic exercise.

Because diathermy is not appropriate for everyone, patients are screened for contraindications before treatment.

Electrical Muscle Stimulation

Electrical stimulation uses carefully controlled electrical impulses delivered through electrodes placed on the skin.

Different forms of electrical stimulation can be selected for different purposes. Depending upon the patient’s condition and the type of current used, electrical stimulation may help with temporary pain relief, reduction of muscle spasm, muscle activation or neuromuscular re-education.

Treatment intensity and electrode placement are individualized for the patient’s comfort and therapeutic objective.

Our Approach

Technology Is a Tool—Not the Treatment Plan

Having multiple treatment technologies gives us options, but more treatment does not necessarily mean better treatment.

Dr. Than selects therapies according to the patient’s examination findings, diagnosis, functional limitations and response to care. A treatment program may combine appropriate therapeutic modalities with non-surgical spinal decompression, manual techniques and progressive therapeutic exercise.

Our objective is to use the right combination of treatments at the appropriate stage of recovery—helping patients move from pain management toward improved mobility, function and greater independence.

Evaluation first. Treatment second. Functional recovery is the goal.

Why Choose Us

Care That Helps You Move Forward.
